What is the average travel and vacation expense for an American family per year?

Posted on July 9th, 2010 by admin in vacation | 1 Comment »

How much does an average American family spend on travel and vacation in the span of one year?

Including things like, visiting family, vacations, travel expenses, air fare, food, touring, and lodging?
Listing the average expense for your family would be appreciated too.

I’d like to mount a campaign to encourage people not to go anywhere. Travel has become so expensive and unpleasant that it’s hard to understand why people don’t stay home.
Why are we crowding our highways and airports to get someplace else? Newspapers and magazines are filled with ads trying to get us to travel. They want us to go somewhere – anywhere but home.

When do you start to accumulate vacation pay?

Posted on July 6th, 2010 by admin in vacation | 2 Comments »

I have been told after a 3 month probationary period you start to accumulate vacation pay at a rate of 4% of gross earnings (for hourly employees). I have also heard after a set amount of worked hours vacation pay should start to accumulate. Are either one of these statements accurate?

I work for a small company that is just starting up. I’m not as familiar with accounting as I’d like to be and am having difficulty finding information on the Gov’t of Canada website.

It depends on the business. All of them are different..

How can you tell if a vacation rental owner is legitimate?

Posted on July 3rd, 2010 by admin in vacation | 1 Comment »

We are in the process of renting a vacation home and want to be sure that when we get to our destination it’s not a scam. You typically have to pay the rental price up front (or a large portion of it). What are your options if you go on vacation and find that the property is not what was advertised? Once they have you rmoney, what can you do? I hate to be so untrusting, but there are so many people out there these days looking for ways to rip others off.

How much vacation do teachers get per year? Do teachers work on holidays while the kids are home?

Posted on June 30th, 2010 by admin in vacation | 3 Comments »

I imagine they get as many days of vacation as there are days between the end of a school year and the start of the next? I’m asking because I’m doing some career exploration.

I am a teacher in the state of TN. In our city, we are on 9 weeks. We get a week’s vacation for Fall Break; we’ll be out on the 19th through Jan 5th for Winter Break. We’ll have another one in the Spring – one week and then summer. I usually teach through the summer. Summer school starts at 7:30 am and ends at 12:00. I still have time to do what I want to do. Summer school lasts through early July and I have about 6 weeks before school starts again. I find that enough time for me to get rested. In addition, we have our sick and personal days.

Is a vacation to Jamaica in hurricane season too dangerous?

Posted on June 28th, 2010 by admin in vacation | 14 Comments »

I’m planning a vacation for my mom and I. We’re going to Jamaica the first week of September 2009. Is this too risky a move, in reference to hurricane season? My mom’s a little nervous about getting stuck on the island with a hurricane.

As you are aware, hurricane season is from June 1 to November 30. While no one can say you will or will not be hit by a hurricane during the period, odds are slim. With the number of storms predicted to be slighly less active, that reduces your chances some. Also, the second link, gives you a history of tracks. If you are scared to travel due to the fear of a hurricane, are you scarded to travel due to the chance of catching H1N1 (swine flu), a plane crash, someone breaking into your house while you are gone, getting sunburnt, etc. etc. etc.

Hurricane forecasters at Colorado State University have lowered their prediction for the number of hurricanes they expect to hit the Atlantic Basin in 2009 to five, down from an April forecast of six hurricanes.

According to researchers Philip J. Klotzbach and William M. Gray, the revised forecast "is based on an extended-range early June statistical prediction scheme that utilizes 58 years of past data … the influence of El NiƱo conditions is implicit in these predictor fields."

The forecast states that information obtained through May 2009 indicates that the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season will be slightly less active than the average 1950-2000 season. Gray and Klotzbach also predicted 2009 will have 11 named storms, 50 named storm days, 20 hurricane days, 2 major (Category 3-4-5) hurricanes, and 4 major hurricane days.

Where should a go on vacation when I get back from deployment?

Posted on June 26th, 2010 by admin in vacation | 3 Comments »

I’m deployed in Afghanistan at the moment. I just got back from my mid-tour leave in Las Vegas and now I’m planning for my vacation I am going to take when I get back, sometime in the January-March timeframe.

Here’s what I am looking for:

I want to go somewhere warm, somewhere RELAXING. I am not looking to hit up a new club every night or anything like that. I am in to just unwinding, taking in scenery, being somewhere I’ve never bee, somewhere unique, etc. Price isn’t going to be a huge issue, but I am not looking to spend more than $5000 on a week long vacation. It can be anywhere in the world, I just want something new/fun/relaxing. Any ideas?

Find an out of the way Caribbean Island. Don’t do the touristy ST Croix, hit somewhere like St. Johns island. It is fairly inexpensive to stay there and you can take a ferry to other places like St Thomas and St Martin to party and shop.
